Why not?

Are you longing to try new things but feel like something’s holding you back? Do you agonise over making the wrong decision? You might be listening to that internal voice of fear too much – the one that’s standing in your way. Read on for our tips to overcome it.

FEELING THE FEAR

It’s something that affects us all. We worry about trying something new for fear of failure or embarrassment. We put off making a big decision because we’re scared to take the wrong path. We doubt ourselves. What will other people think of us? Will we make a mistake?

Part of being brave is recognising what’s holding you back. It’s reframing the narrative and seeing an opportunity to grow and learn something from the experience. Instead of worrying about whether to take a chance, it’s asking yourself, why not?

DO IT ANYWAY

“All you have to do to diminish your fear is to develop more trust in your ability to handle whatever comes your way.”

– Susan Jeffers, author of our book of the month, helps to make the decision process easier.

Feel the fear and do it anyway outlines a ‘no-lose model’, where no matter the decision you make, there are good things that can come from it. You can turn your pain into power and take away the fear that you’ll make the wrong choice. It encourages you to recognise how you’re feeling, but move forward anyway.

This is a brilliant book. I love her No-lose model, where no matter the decision there are good things to come from it. It’s going to be a game changer for my decision making.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Trying new things can help you grow, increase your focus and enhance your performance. A fresh experience or venture can be good for the mind, as well as the soul, and get your creativity flowing.

HERE ARE OUR TIPS TO OVERCOME THE FEAR:

  • Acknowledge how you’re feeling – whether that’s simply taking a moment to recognise fear and anxiety or having a more in-depth chart to monitor your emotions

  • Clear your head – take a breath and give yourself time to think. We love getting out for a walk in the fresh air to find our focus.

  • Reassure yourself – you can do this. You’re strong, capable, and you’ve already made it through 100% of your toughest challenges.

  • Ease the pressure – don’t put too much stress on yourself and lower your expectations of the outcome if needed. It’s an experiment; a step out of your comfort zone. New experiences can be exciting and invigorating, and you don’t need to be perfect or excel at something straightaway.

  • Do it anyway – don’t miss out by not trying, you might be doing yourself a disservice. As Dr Pepper so memorably asked: what’s the worst that can happen?

We challenge you (and ourselves) to try something new this month. It can be big or small: learning a new skill, going to an event you wouldn’t normally attend, reaching out to someone you admire. Feel the fear inside, then just do it… we can’t think of a reason why not!

There is freedom waiting for you, on the breezes of the sky. And you ask, ‘What if I fall?’ Oh, but my darling, What if you fly?
